The Indianapolis Area

The nation’s 12th largest city, Indianapolis has, in only a few years, established itself as the “Amateur Sports Capital” of the United States (Click Here for Demographics of Indy). Long famous for the Indianapolis 500 Mile Race, the state’s capital is now home of the Indianapolis Pacers basketball, Colts football, and Indians baseball teams. Our city is the host of the Brickyard 400, which in its first year set attendance records for a NASCAR event. From 2000-2007, Indianapolis became home for the US Grand Prix Formula One race. Indianapolis has recently hosted such events as the NCAA College Basketball Final Four in 2000 and will again host it 2010, Pan American Games, World Gymnastic Championships, PGA Golf Championship, National Basketball Association (NBA) Finals, and the World Police and Fire Games. In 2002, the World Basketball Championships for Men was held for the first time in the United States in Indianapolis.

Eagle Creek Park holds the distinction of being the nation’s largest city park. This nature lover’s paradise is comprised of 5000 acres and contains a bird sanctuary, miles of hiking trails, and Eagle Creek Reservoir - Site of the World Federation Rowing Championships in 1994. In the last decade, renovation of the downtown area has produced the Conseco Fieldhouse (home of the Indianapolis Pacers) and the RCA Dome (home of the Indianapolis Colts). Union Station was reborn in 1986 and now houses a beautiful banquet facility and an indoor state-of-the-art go-kart racing facility. The Indianapolis Zoo has relocated and expanded in the White River Park area, along with such attractions as the Eiteljorg Museum of American Indian and Western Art and the White River Gardens botanical exposition. Indianapolis is also home to the world’s largest interactive children’s museum. The Circle Centre Mall provides a vibrant downtown anchor for a number of major retailers, excellent restaurants, theaters, clubs, offices and hotels in the downtown area. Undoubtedly, the greatest resource of Indiana is its people. For a large city, Indianapolis has the feel of a smaller and openly friendly town, a feeling that it has developed from the many surrounding Hoosier communities, which have nurtured its growth.
