Department of Emergency Medicine
The Department was founded in 1999, has rapidly integrated into the educational community at IUSM, and continues to both contribute to the School of Medicine and discipline. We were the 54th academic department (now there are more than 70) among 125 medical schools. We have a distinguished faculty involved nationally: member of the Board of Directors of the American Board of Emergency Medicine and three Oral Board Examiners, Past President of the Society for Academic Emergency Medicine and a 2006 recipient of the Parker J. Palmer “Courage to Teach” Award by the ACGME (the first such award in the IUSM and the third for an EM physician), and member of the Board of Directors of the American Academy of Emergency Medicine. Our faculty serve as Medical Director Indianapolis Racing League (IRL), Medical Director Indianapolis Motor Speedway (IMS), and Medical Directors of the evolving county wide ambulance service. The group is actively involved in the School’s structure. We sit on 7 committees (chairing one), 4 competency committees, and provide the state wide director for Evidence Based Medicine and Biostatistics. Our community involvement includes an advocacy program: “The Doctor is In” advocacy and mentoring project at Forest Manor Middle School of the Indianapolis Public Schools. In the spring of 2007 we integrated our traditional “Research Day” with the 35th Annual Indiana American College of Emergency Physicians (ACEP) Post Graduate Course in Emergency Medicine. This enriched both constituencies, and will continue this year. We believe we have enhanced the environment for learners. The evidence of this includes the fact that we host the country's largest mandatory senior clerkship in EM and this has been chosen the School’s best clinical clerkship by the Classes of 2005 & 2006 and rates highest among clinical clerkships in school sponsored web based student evaluations. In addition, we provide the largest and one of the most successful EM residencies in the nation led by a core of program directors to include the nation’s senior most program director. Each class of residents comes from an average of 11 different states and 13 different schools. The graduates have a first attempt board certification success rate of 99%. We have an evolving research program which recently realized its first NIH support. Less than 20% of academic departments have NIH funding. In addition, we have two faculty who are Research Scientists in the Regenstrief Institute, Inc. The clinical venues include the state’s two Level 1 Trauma Centers which together have nearly 200,000 visits annually. We believe they are complementary to one another in providing exposure to diverse populations and clinical presentations. In 2006 we assumed responsibility for the faculty presence at the Riley Children’s Hospital (adjacent to Wishard on our campus) and will thoughtfully integrate it into our curriculum. July 1, 2007 the faculty at the Wishard, Methodist and Riley EDs became fully integrated in a dual employment model—full-time faculty within the School of Medicine. This group of almost 60 makes us the School’s sixth largest clinical department. These faculty represent almost 20 different residency programs. Finally, it is our expectation to create a fully endowed professorship as soon as matching funds are identified. Currently less than 10% of EM academic departments have such Please explore our web site and call upon any of the resources offered within it.
